Play Winning Checkers

Fun But Not Very Helpful
Great book and rating booster!I am a regular at the MSN gaming zone (usually playing in rated room 1 or kings a competitive room) and before buying this book I had around a 1550-1600 rating which is not good at all. So I thought I would try reading a book and see what it would do to my game. A MAJOR improvement occured in my game after reading this book. My rating is now hundreds of points higher than before. I have beaten some of the best players and my recent statistics are 16 wins and 3 losses. Where would I be without this book? I dont think my rating would of moved a notch. This is clear to understand and I am buying it for my checker buddys. The board it includes with the 32 numbers is not only great for recording your games you play...but its great for mail play! I got 100 times more out of this book than what I payed. Thank you Mr.Pike...you really improved my game.
Great Book for Begginer-IntermediateI got this book the second day I started playing checkers. I am now a serious checkers player and can improve my rating about 50 points in one day! This book was really helpful to a player like me and I would suggest it to a friend.

Why Stocks Go Up (and Down)
Published in Paperback by William Pike (05 January, 1999)

Well written bookbut this book is not helpfull
An Amazing BookI have read multiple, as well as a variety of books over the past fifteen years, since I started to invest in the market.I read the first edition many years ago, and I read the latest edition several months ago. The excellence continues. You will not learn technical analysis, but you sure will learn the basis of fundamental analysis in a lucid and highly stimulating manner. Use this book as the foundation and then use any of the multitude of books out there to expand this basic knowledge. When you further your reading it will be done with a sound basis in fact. Good Hunting
Excellent first book on investmentsI have been a professional money manager, in charge of over $5bil. in international funds. This was the first book I read on the subject of stocks, over 15 years ago, and I still think it's one of the best: lucid, friendly, non-patronizing. It dares to cut through the obfuscating language of the profession and the tons and tons of blah, blah, blah, and answer that basic question, "What is a stock?" This is the one book I'd recommend to anyone wanting to find the answer, complete beginner and seasoned veteran alike. (I am constantly surprised to find out that even professionals can't give a clear answer to this question; and the market's behavior over the past 2 years suggests that many never knew it in the first place.) To first-time readers, I envy you; good luck on your journey!

The Death and Life of Bishop Pike
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (June, 1976)
Average review score:

Death by exposure to ManicheanismPartisian's right, Towne and Strnigfellow paint an accurate, contemporary picture of Bishop Pike. Most people interested in the controversy surrounding the bishop and his trial for heresy nowadays will likely be Philip K. Dick fans eager to delve into the figure behind Bishop Archer in Transmigration of. Towne and Stringfellow provide the chance to do so. Readers can form their own conclusions on what Pike was really looking for in Judaea, what his views on the Trinity were and how his religious thought evolved towards what was then, in the 1960s, a radical form of social activism. Readers should know the authors don't like to beat around the proverbial burning bush as PKD does when he mulls Pike's life and death over. Their account reads more like trial testimony in places than Wilderness Revolt Action Adventures starring St. Thomas and John the Baptist vs. Evil Roman Time Travelling Tyrants. Still, a pearl at a pretty price for mere mortals managing to get buy on a meagre alotment.
An honest portrait of an intriguing figurePike was one of the most controversial figures in American theological history. Before his mysterious death in the Judean desert the Bishop of California wrote on everything from situational ethics to the occult, he was a leading figure in the movement to desegregate the Christian church, was the target of a heresy trial that only succeeded in discrediting the whole concept of heresy in the American church. Towne and Stringfellow were Pike's contemporaries and thus this book is the best guide to the Bishop's life yet written.

Pike McCallister
Published in Paperback by Publication Consultants (July, 1998)
Average review score:

A good book for students who are studying American HistoryThe book "Pike McAllister" helps to bring alive the history of the United States during the Civil War. It combines elements of slavery, the Underground Railroad, relationships between slave owners and their slaves, and family values. This would be excellent reading for students who may be studying the Civil War in American History.
As interesting for parents as it is for their young people.Stephen Hahn did a remarkable job creating an adventure that rings true on many levels. The characters and settings are believable and the attention to detail remarkable. It was refreshing to learn more about what was happening on the homefront during the civil war, though the battle scenes were chillingly vivid. All in all it was a satisfying read.

Alice Pike Barney: Her Life and Art
Published in Hardcover by Smithsonian Institution Press (April, 1994)
Average review score:

FascinatingA fascinating book on an extraordinary life. Alice Pike Barney (1857-1928) was an artist of considerable talent, a socialite with considerable conscience. She was loved by Henry Morton Stanley, but spurned him. She married unhappily twice, but flourished as a widow and divorcee. Her Studio House and Sylvan Theater still grace Washington, but she left for Hollywood in the 1920s and died there. Jean Kling's book has good prints of her art, an insightful account of her life. I recommend it.

Building the Mass Pike (Images of America: Massachusetts)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (March, 2002)
Average review score:

Nice Photographic HistoryIn a way the sparse narrative in what is essentially a photo colelction is a tease because the pictures really pique your interest; and the "rest of the story" is not told. Nonetheless, anybody who rides the Pike, lives in or around the Pike or has an interest in big road building project will find this little book fascinating. The author tries to orient the reader in all of the pictures because so much of what was available for reference is either gone now or because the pictures themselves have a moonscape quality to them. I would have liked a large locator map in the front of the book, with reference to it tagged on each photo. That would have helped me to "put things in place" in my mind. I also would have liked a little more detail on why things went they way they did (why did the Pike not go through Worcester, for example). All that being said, however, I know a lot more about the Mass Pike now than I did before; which is what I hoped would happen when I bought the book.

Corporate Finance and Investment: Decisions and Strategies
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (March, 1993)
Average review score:

very helpful for studiesI did buy this book when I studied at Leeds Met Uni. It was very helpful to learn for the exam in Financial Management. And I am using it still right now in Germany. English is the world language and so I am going to try to read as much as I can in English.
Pike & Neale are lecturers in Bradford close to Leeds. They wrote this book in an easy way to understand what is about Corporate Finance. I think it will be very helpful for me when I am going to start my job in the auditing with Ernst & Young.
The book mainly deals in a disorganized way with mid-game tactics and end-game situations. Interesting traps and shots are presented, along with problems that are too hard for most beginners. That's all there is; just a little about openings, for instance. I kept reading and rereading this book thinking there has to be more here, but I have yet to find it.
Read the book if you only wish to have your appetite stimulated, and then do your real study from a more complete book such as Reinfeld.
